Are you looking for patterns for boys or girls?

 

I always start with Google images, just to get an idea of what's out there, then decide lacy or plain,, button or pullover,, free or pay?

 

Ravelry has 68 free child vest patterns, you have to sign up to see them, I think

 

edit- oops, I just noticed you are looking for patterns for boys, I missed that before. I've been poking around since i posted this, not finding much for the nine year old, but I did find this Red Heart hoodie vest, ladies pattern. You could make it in "boy" colors, maybe do buttons or velcro
