I may have missed this somewhere, but to set up an etsy account, do I need a Federal ID and do I need to pay sales or other taxes (other than IRS :angry should I make enough money)?

Thanks, Sherry

That's going to depend on the laws of your state and county. Most people just set it up and don't worry about these things.

I strongly suggest taking Amy's class 'Do I want to start a crochet business?'. It covers all of this and then some.

If you decide to do this as a sole proprietor then you don't need a federal id. You'll need to check out the Dept. of Revenue to see if you'll need to collect sales tax and if digital items are taxable.

You'll need to check with the county if you need a license to work out of your house and if you need a license to have a business.

If you want to give the store a name other than your own you'll need a DBA.

You'll also need to talk to your accountant.

There's a lot to do to do it right.

Thanks, Rose

I know that the county will not be a problem. This is rural AR we are talking about. I operated a decorating business out of my house when I lived in town and had to have a city permit, sales tax permit, and the federal ID. I will have to check out the sales tax thing.

Also, the class sounds pretty interesting. I will check it out. I may not have the "umph" to keep enough stuff going for a store, but I have enough experience to make the things that I want to sell.

Thanks also, ann. I originally missed your post!

Thanks for the info!

Sherry

Etsy doesn't require any of that. All you need for etsy is a paypal account.

In order to set up your 'home business' legally there's a lot of back ground stuff you need to do.

It reads like you want to make items to sell. You'll have to check out labeling laws and childrens labeling laws if you do anything for kids under 12. The other problem with etsy and making items to sell is that most of the people on etsy are crafts people (not all but the majority, I believe).

Good luck with it.
